Aston Botterell

St Michael and All Angels

WV16 6QX

St Michael’s is in an attractive rural situation and belongs to the Brown Clee benefice. The united benefice consists of six parishes and seven churches in the beautiful rolling countryside of south Shropshire between Bridgnorth and Ludlow. The church has a nave, chancel and south aisle dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The western tower was rebuilt in the 1800s, partly with reused stone. There are lancet windows in the south wall. The porch is from 1639. The tub shaped font is Norman and is plain except for a carved narrow band encircling it.

There are two monuments of note.  The earlier one is an upright slab to John Botterell who died in 1479 and his wife. The later one is an Elizabethan monument to another John Botterell who died in 1588 and his wife. They lie on a tomb chest with their children kneeling round the sides.
